Hatching and Rearing Chicks

Hatching and Rearing Chicks

We have been very lucky during the summer as we got to hatch some chicken eggs in an incubator.  It was so ‘eggciting’ for everyone when hatch day arrived!  First hatched was Billy who was sadly called this due to him/her having no mates!  As Billy was the only chick from our first batch, we hatched more and were lucky to get Millie, Mollie and Lily!  The chicks have caused a lot of chatter around the home with staff and residents talking about them. Residents have been visiting them along with their family members to see them grow.  Billy at the age of 5 weeks has now gone to its foster home with Jutta, our nurse on Castle Ashby.  The other 3 chicks are happily thriving in our activity room.  Once they get their feathers which means they can maintain body heat, they will be going to our Head of Activities, Debbie’s garden.
